mFv8dusjJ-jIcxT8AY52JvwToronto, November 22, 2013. Fifty years ago today Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas. Do you remember where you where? I was in a classroom across from the physics lab at Sir George Williams University (now part of Concordia) in downtown Montreal.

Recently the papers have been full of stories and details about Kennedy and his fateful day in Dallas. George Dunbar sent me this link to a columnist in today’s Toronto Star.

The 26 seconds of horror were recorded forever by Dallas clothier Abraham Zapruder with his Bell & Howell home movie camera. Today, versions of the movie are all over Youtube. Do a search and view one of the many copies of this grainy 8mm Kodachrome II colour film taken 50 years ago.

And, if you are old enough, think back to the end of Camelot….

Toronto, November 19, 2013. Congratulations to long time member GEORGE DUNBAR who was voted the Urban Toronto Photographer of the Week by Urban Toronto! George is a regular at our monthly Toronto meetings. He was an industrial photographer at IBM Canada prior to his retirement. He directed the Photographica-fair video on our web site and until recently wrote the column Browsing through our Exchanges for Photographic Canadiana. Toronto November 19, 2013. Toronto cinematographer Jamie Day Fleck visited the PHSC Toronto meeting last month in a search for an 8×10 field camera. She is directing a documentary about the Armenian Genocide survivor Kourken Hovsepian. Hovsepian photographed generations of people in the Bronx, NYC, from the 1920s through the 1970s in his studio under the name “Photos by Kirk”. The New York Times wrote an article called “The Memory Seeker” on April 14, 2002. It tells a brief story about Hovsepian and his daughter, Ms Olsen.

Jamie emailed me a reply yesterday (November 18, 2013) saying, “I think I have located the 8×10 camera I needed but I am still in need of a Speed Graphic (4×5) preferably with a flash attachment. I know there are a lot of these cameras circulating so I don’t think it should be too hard to locate”.

France, November 18, 1787. Bob Lansdale sent over a note from the Daguerreian Society. The famous creator of the Daguerreotype was born this day 225 years ago! You can see a bit more information on Beverly Wilgus’ post here for M. Daguerre and his famous process announced in January, 1839. The bust of Daguerre is from a flat stereo card in the Daguerreian Society collection.

Sixty Years – a book about Dr Ted Grant and his photographs

Vancouver November 16, 2013. PHSC member Dr Ted Grant sent me a note today mentioning his recent book Sixty Years of Legendary Photojournalism. Written by Thelma Fayle with a forward by two prominent conservatives, ex-Prime Minister Joe Clark and his wife Maureen McTeer. The book is available in either traditional paper format or the new eBook style. Both are Published by Heritage House.

I looked up a cover shot of the book and who was featured, but none other than Liberal ex-Prime Minister, the late Pierre Trudeau sliding down a banister! So if you have tired of the shenanigans here in Toronto (where Ford is a four lettered word…) Continue reading →

Soccer: Canada’s National Sport

Celebrate the launch of  SOCCER: CANADA’S NATIONAL SPORT, the new book by our (PHSC) past president Les Jones. He says it is, “a remarkable achievement and the first Canadian coffee-table book on The Beautiful Game.” The launch is in the REAL SPORTS BAR located at the Air Canada Centre and takes place at noon on Monday, November 25th.

Les is a former photographer for the Canadian Soccer Association and has covered soccer for over 30 years, supplying articles and photographs to hundreds of books and magazines. He is a director of the Robbie Soccer Tournament and The Soccer Centre as well as chairman of The Soccer Hall of Fame & Museum. Continue reading →

Fall Camerama Show – November 24, 2013

GP-Leica-M6-150x150TORONTO November 9, 2013. Gary Perry is hosting his latest show on  Sunday  November 24th, 2013 at his new location: Days Hotel and Conference Centre in Toronto.

The Days  Hotel is at 185 Yorkland Bl. (near Highway 404 and Sheppard) – good parking in the hotel lots. Admission only $7 – 10 am to 3 pm. Click image at left for a poster and more details.

VENDORS: If you haven’t already confirmed with Gary, please email him at gv.perry@gmail.com to confirm your table rental. Table charge is $50 and includes entry for vendor and one helper (all helpers must arrive before 10am and be actually working with the vendor).  Vendors are expected to occupy their tables until 3pm.

Toronto, November 9, 2013. Thanks to members John Linsky and John Allman for bring to our attention Toronto Photographer Harry Enchin. Harry took a selection of Toronto Archives photos and merged portions with his modern colour images photographed at the same spot and time.

Harry uses different materials such as fabrics to display his images. While the show here in the city at the Akasha Art Projects 2013 ended last month, his videos and the Toronto Life article can be seen here or by clicking on the icon.

George Dunbar made similar shots by combining archival images with modern ones so half the image is old and half is a carefully merged new colour image.

George goes on to say, “A number of Enchin’s photo treatments can be found here.
“Another photographer (Alden Cudanin) developed a similar technique shown here.
“My own ‘best effort’ is this one“.

We were formally  introduced to this concept of rephotography by Andrzej Maciejewski in March 17, 2010 at a monthly Toronto meeting. Andrzej used slides from two of his books to show Montreal spots photographed a century apart at the same time of day and day of the year which he calculated using shadows in the original image.

Toronto Orangemen Parade 1964

Toronto, November 4, 2013. According to U of T Magazine, the UTAC (University of Toronto Art Centre) is hosting 22 gelatine silver prints of the city taken by photographer Lutz Dille, a German-born photographer and filmmaker who lived in this city for three decades.

The photos are on display until November 14, 2013. They return in the New Year for a second showing. Go to the UTAC site for more details.
