Phoneography – from the darkroom to instagram…

This Touch is version 5, spring 2014

Toronto. In this morning’s Globe and Mail, columnist Marina Strauss reports on the evolution of our camera stores (Black’s, Henry’s) as camera phones eat up the sales of the traditional point and shoot digital cameras. She calls this photography – images taken with a smart phone and uploaded rather than printed – as phoneography. The transition away from traditional point and shoot cameras is supported by various sites that track sales. Strauss notes that big communications companies now own outlets like Black’s (Telis) and The Source (Bell), stores which become venues for their cell phones.

A few weeks back on May 8th, I did a post about the cartoon character Betty who asks her husband Bub about cameras. Bub says they look “exactly like a phone”.

The icon to the left shows my iPod Touch which includes a 5mp camera. It goes everywhere with me unlike my Sony NEX 6. I owned three digital cameras, including two Nikon Coolpix models, before I managed to exceed that level of detail. I broke through with a top of the line Sony F828 complete with an 8mp sensor!

Photographic Canadiana 40-1

40-1-sm40 years ago, I never thought that the PHSC would evolve and thrive the way it has. We are blessed with a large progressive and articulate executive board running the gamut from youngsters in their 20s to elders in their 80s. Tons of professional talent and every bit is unpaid volunteer work!

I joined the new camera collecting group just after the charter  membership ended. At the time, I lived in Montreal and flew frequently to Toronto on business. I bought a Leica M4 a couple of years earlier, shortly after my second daughter was born, and was searching for lenses and accessories. Each trip I checked the Toronto Star want ads (427). One night I saw an invitation to a meeting at the North York library. I delayed my return home a few hours and went to the meeting. I have been a member ever since. Continue reading

SafariJanuary, 1839 not one but TWO photographic processes where announced. I often wonder what Daguerre or Fox Talbot would think today about cameras and digital images.

The comic “Betty” says it nicely – Betty asks her husband “Do today’s students really not know what a camera looks like?”, after a local school goes to lock-down when camera gear is mistaken for guns. Her husband replies “sure … it looks exactly like a phone.”

Member George Dunbar thoughtfully sent me this link to a YouTube video featuring a panel discussion on recent changes in photography. Enjoy.

Game Boy in 2000

DF_GAMEBOY_ROCKCENTERNYC May 6, 2014. One of my regular blog reads, DF Fireball, noted this post by David Friedman, a New York photographer.  Friedman posts odd images and comments on his Ironic Sans blog. He mentions taking photographs with a Game Boy back in the year 2000. He doubled the image size of the 160 x 144 pixel images (sample at left) to show them today. Clicking on the one I chose to illustrate this post will show you a 200% enlargement – pixels and all.

David has a site for his day to day professional photographs as well. Have a look.
