Toronto. Long time PHSC member, frequenter of our fairs, and a concert photographer Harold Staats recently wrote this note on his winning of the people’s choice award this year with his arresting black & white shot of guitarist Eric Clapton. You can see Harold’s photos on Flicker!

My thanks to Bob Lansdale for copying me on the following message from Mr Staats:

Singers and bands entertain at various intersections and storefronts while people stroll by and enjoy the music and visit the shops and restaurants along Queen Street. Continue reading

Toronto. It was a great event last week when we auctioned the contents of the Yamada Photo Studio. Our thanks to all the people who came out to help and contribute to our ability to promote Canadian Photographic history. These shots are courtesy of Photographic Canadiana editor Bob Lansdale.

The auction was a busy event. After months of discussion and visits by various PHSC members, the auction suddenly came together and Clint had only one week to get out notifications to members and supporters of the PHSC.

The many Lot images shown a few days ago were taken by member Oscar Li using a Canon DSLR provided by Clint. Continue reading

ADOX MINOX film c1962 taken with an iPod Touch

I snapped this pair of ADOX MINOX film cassettes c1962  with my iPod Touch

Toronto. In the late 1950s I was training to install, operate and maintain a radio system to bring communications to the wilds of Northern Quebec and Labrador. Part of the training included a trip to the manufacturer’s factory in Belleville where the equipment was being made.

Dan F. brought along a nifty little spy camera and took shots in the factory to the dismay of our teacher/leader. We processed the grainy little negatives that evening in Dan’s hotel room. The tiny precision camera was a Minox IIIs – about 3/4s the price of a Leica in those days. Continue reading

imagesToronto. Did you know the PHSC has offered awards to writers of photographic history for many years? These awards were established some years ago by then president Les Jones to further interest and understanding of our history, especially Canadian photographic history.

Today, the awards are co-ordinated by our Awards administrator, John Morden. You can see the details here or by clicking on the AWARDS tab at the top of any page.

The AWARDS wording is revised from time to time to clarify its content. The latest revision is August 1, 2014.
