Newsletter 15-1

PHSC-E-Mail-V-15-1-3Toronto. Another excellent issue of our newsletter by editor David Bridge. Remember our May meeting is a week late – 4th Wednesday at Campbell House, not the Memorial Room.

Toronto notes reviews the inspiring story of Henryk Ross and his Lodz Ghetto photographs (now owned by AGO)  taken in the tragic early 1940s in occupied Poland. The images were narrated by Michael Mitchell (left).

Articles cover stereographs archived by U of T, Bob Lansdale’s search for Canadian Dry Plate manufacturers, Kodak Canada after the closing, CONTACT, and a show by PHSC’s George Dunbar next month.

This issue continues with the Image Show highlights, live photo links by Louise Freyburger,  Current Events, Want Ads, and our coming Spring Fair, The Big One.

Click on Michael Mitchell or here to see and print this interesting issue.

Photographic Canadiana 41-1

_PhotoCan-41-1--PROOF-2-63-smToronto. Our latest issue of Photographic Canadiana should be in your hands by now. If not, join us today. Just click the PayPal button at right and away you go!

If you have read any of the journals since about 1997, you know we are fortunate to have such a perfectionist in editor Bob Lansdale. He goes the extra mile to ensure each photo is printed correctly and that every selected photograph complements its article just so.

This edition is no exception. The lead article is John Kantymir’s Kodak No. 4, a folding Kodet Junior ably researched by another professional, Robert Wilson.

The journal continues with reviews of the Toronto meetings during the first four months of this year, plus a photo essay of the March auction. These reviews are followed by Mr Lansdale’s own article on Bill Tetlow, a press photographer like Bob Lansdale, in the 1950s and 60s era. Continue reading

May 31, 2015

May 31, 2015

Toronto. Spring is here and so is the popular PHSC fair. Once again our fair will be at Trident Hall in the South West area of Toronto know as Etobicoke.

As the Toronto Ride for the Heart will be on Sunday too, the DVP and Gardiner as far west as Park Lawn will be closed from 2am to 2 pm so plan ahead!

Click the icon at left (or here) to see and print our bookmark which has full details. Or you can click on the word FAIRS on the menu bar at the top of each page to see all our shows.

We have added a room this time but the Hall still allows fewer tables offsetting the much easier access. Click here for David Bridge’s nifty map!

We have more free parking just across Evans from the Hall at Cool Beer Brewery – watch for the signs. Come and enjoy the show while you add to your collection! All vendors will be happy to quote on any items you wish to “de-collect”.

Michael Mitchell and AGO’s Lodz exhibit

20091130-143348-H3LNEXT TORONTO MEETING: Wed, April 15th, 2015
Michael Mitchell has spoken to the PHSC a couple of times before. This event co-incides with the Lodz exhibit of the Henryk Ross photographs of a Polish Ghetto in the early years of World War 2.

Michael wrote several AGO exhibition catalogues and contributed to the book published concurrently with the Lodz exhibit. Come out and hear this interesting speaker talking of his latest experiences with the Lodz exhibit.

For more information, read the latest PHSC newsletter 14-11 – Robert Lansdale has written an article on the exhibit (see 14-11, page 5).

The public is welcome.  Go to our Programs page for times and directions.

CN Tower is 40 years old this year

Construction of the CN Tower antenna complex

Construction of the CN Tower antenna complex

Toronto. I lived in Montreal in the early 1970s. Every three months I drove to Toronto visiting relatives and at journey’s end, I would pass the CN Tower construction site, thinking this would make a great photo essay – like Peter Stackpole’s Leica essay on construction of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge to Oakland in the 1930s.

I never captured the tower’s progress, but others did and one enterprising individual has posted those images on Flickr complete with a well researched and detailed story for each photograph.

PC journal editor Robert Lansdale’s son and namesake has finished his Flickr page on the building of the CN Tower after three years of intensive interviews and research. Robert Jr has posted photos taken by members of the construction crews on a Flickr page aptly titled CN Tower’s 40th Anniversary – Start of Construction. Each photo is accompanied by text. Click on each picture and scroll down to read the text accompanying the photograph. (Hopefully, Robert Jr will combine the text and photographs in a book at some point.)

Visit the site and share the beginnings of this historic Toronto landmark. Today, no matter where you live in the city, the tower guides you to the downtown area.
