Canvas Factory

CanvasFactory-lgToronto. A few days ago I received an email from Sarah Grace Del Rosario inviting me to exchange site links. I usually dis regard these offers but this one was intriguing. With the shift to digital many members are concerned about how future generations will find and view digital prints.  The older processes, mostly silver based, can be viewed without any device other than the viewer’s eyes.

Sarah’s site suggests another option for digital prints – printing them on a medium used for home decor – indoors or out! Have a look at the site of this Toronto based company.

LAC Daguerreotype of Kate McDougall c1848

LAC Daguerreotype of Kate McDougall c1848 MIKAN 3192966

Toronto. Editor Bob Lansdale sent me a note recently announcing an interesting exhibit taking place in Ottawa this fall and winter at the National Gallery. The National Gallery has an arrangement to exhibit holdings of the Library and Archives Canada. The arrangement in general and this exhibit in particular are subject of a behind the scenes podcast you can hear or read at this Library and Archives Canada web site.

There is more material about daguerreotypes and this exhibit on the Discover Blog, which is the Library and Archives Canada blog.

The exhibit runs from September 5, 2015 through to February 28, 2016, so if you have a chance to visit between now and the end of next February, please do so (n.b. 2016 is a leap year so technically visit by the 28th of February).

From Darkroom to Daylight

Toronto. PHSC received an email today from American author, filmmaker and photographer Harvey Wang. Harvey will be here at the Stephen Bulger gallery on Saturday, November 21, 2015 for a screening of his film and a book signing.

Harvey says, “I just wanted to let you know that I will be screening my film FROM DARKROOM TO DAYLIGHT (and signing books) in Toronto at the Stephen Bulger Gallery on Nov 21, 2015.

“The project explores how the dramatic shift from film to digital has affected photographers and their work. I interviewed more than 40 important photographers and prominent figures in the field, including Jerome Liebling, George Tice, Taryn Simon, Charles Harbutt, David Goldblatt, Sally Mann, and Eugene Richards, as well as innovators Steven Sasson, who built the first digital camera while at Kodak, and Thomas Knoll, who along with his brother created Photoshop”.  Continue reading

Lauren holds a Bachelor of Arts with Combined Honours in English and Contemporary Studies from University of King’s College and Master of Museum Studies from the University of Toronto. What does climate change look like in Canada’s Arctic Circle? Most Canadians, and even most northerners, never get the chance to find out. This Is Our Arctic invites you to discover what climate change in the Arctic looks like through the eyes of local youth.

Review of The Magic of 3D

Felix Russo by Lansdale

Felix Russo by Lansdale

Toronto. Member Felix Russo presented his talk on 3D photography to a delighted audience at the monthly PHSC meeting in Toronto. Felix drew upon a number of his PhotoEd magazine specials on 3D plus some old traditional images collected by members. All example images are converted to anaglyph-style stereos making it easy to view them in colour and monochrome using easily available glasses with cellophane lenses of red (left) and blue (right).

Felix showed many inexpensive ways to create digital stereo such as split prisms or mirrors, sliding beams for single cameras, or even the cha-cha technique of taking two shots, one with weight on the right foot and a second with weight on the left foot. The technique is demonstrated here by Robert Lansdale using a Nikon DSLR. An interesting website is that of Julian Beever. Beever uses 3D concepts to fool the eye into seeing his sidewalk chalk drawings as 3D images. Take a look!  Continue reading

Weegee: Murder is My Business

WeegeeToronto. Arthur Fellig was a New York City photographer famous for his flash shots of crime scenes and his often arrival at a crime scene before the authorities (hence his nickname of Weegee, a phonetic version of Ouija Board. James Adams of the Globe and Mail wrote an Arts article on Friday, October 16, 2015 on this unique photographer and author.

While his work was passed off as far less than the quality images of Walker Evans or Edward Steichen, they have gained stature over time, showing the moody, noir underbelly of NYC of the 1930s and 40s.

The Ryerson Image Centre in downtown Toronto is featuring Fellig’s images through to December 13, 2015. Drop in and see Fellig’s strong images taken with a single flash and a 4×5 Speed Graphic.

Never modest, Weegee stamped the back of his prints with the logo “Credit Photo  by Weegee the Famous” and dropped them off at the many New York City newspapers of the day.

Newsletter 15-5

PHSC-E-Mail-V15-5-33Toronto. Editor DavidBridge has put together another colourful and entertaining edition of the PHSC Newsletter which went out last night to our distribution lists.

Next week’s speaker at the Toronto meeting, Mr Ralph Beaumont, is introduced. Ralph will speak on his new book, Heckman’s Canadian Pacific which is based on the many photographic prints and negatives resident in the CPR archives. NOTE: Ralph Beaumont will be our speaker early in 2016. This Wednesday’s speaker is the popular editor of PhotoEd magazine, Mr Felix Russo. We are sorry if any confusion has arisen.

We review last month’s interesting presentation by member Scott Rickard of the Chilkoot trail from Skagway to Dawson City, famous as a Royal Mail route and the preferred path from an Alaskan port to the famous Klondike gold fields in the Yukon.

Our current journal, coming fairs and auction all receive notice. There is a an obituary for PHSC member and well known photographer 98 year old Harry Joy. Links interest to collectors and photography historians, events (including the PhotoEd Inspiration Forum) and information request wrap up this month’s edition of the Newsletter. Click here or on the icon at left to view and print 15-5.

Vintage Camera Users Group

Hassy-1000F-Kodak-Lens-smToronto.  My friend Russ Forfar of Komenik Camera suggested this site may be of interest to members.

Have a look if you have a Facebook Account. I did a Google search and discovered many other sites devoted to the use of vintage cameras.
