Toronto. This our second newsletter distributed by MailChimp. Using the wonders of technology, editor David Bridge is in Florida while completing this edition of our popular newsletter. We begin by announcing our April speaker, the interesting photographer and past speaker Tom Bochsler, the May Photographica-fair,  and Mark Singer’s review of our March speaker’s talk on Berenice Abbott. A photo essay of our spring auction follows.

We welcome back our first journal editor, Terry Wedge and his article on the annual pinhole photography day (this year it’s April 24th). Terry’s article is augmented by a reprint of Herb Kepler’s Modern Photography article on making pin hole cameras.

Louise Freyburger follows with her column “New Photo Links” and a tip of the hat to George Dunbar for his suggestions. We see Vince Pietropaulo is working on a book about four decades of the Easter procession in Toronto’s Little Italy. Vince has begun a kickstarter campaign to cover publishing costs. Tracking the sun

My good friend George Dunbar sent me a brief note today about the NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day for March 26, 2016. This site linked here is NASA’s picture of the day archive. You can browse back daily to June 1995 and see what picture NASA felt was worthy of promotion that day.

Today’s picture shows how Hungarian photographer Oliver Nagy recorded the sun’s path each day from the winter solstice last December to the spring solstice a few days ago using a pin hole camera and Kodak paper. He calls the result solargraphy Check it out!

PHSC’s Three for Spring Bookmark

Bookmark-3-speakers-2016-smToronto. Journal editor Bob Lansdale came up with a bookmark to remind everyone of the speakers onboard for this spring. Each speaker will be at our Toronto meeting held the third Wednesday of each month. Click the icon at left for a full version of the bookmark.

We begin with April and Tom Bochsler’s presentation on the Canadian war monuments and cemeteries of Europe.

In May we welcome Lorne Shields and his presentation on 19th century bicycles as shown in stereo cards of the era.

And in June, Bob’s son and namesake will share his research into a Toronto landmark on its 40th Anniversary – the history of the CN Tower and the men who built it.

Tom Bochsler: Our European War Memorials and Cemeteries

Our April meeting is traditionally our annual business meeting. In addition we will have the pleasure of hosting photographer Tom Bochsler.

Tom is a retired industrial photographer who operated his still active studio in Burlington, Ontario.Tom last spoke to us back in October 2011 when he and his long time associate Bob Chambers covered a combined 115 years of photography.

His first time as a PHSC speaker was in March of 2006 when he celebrated a half century in photography and was busy composing his first book “The Art of Industry“.

This time out, in memory of those souls who served Canada in two world wars in Europe, Tom will present and discuss his tour of the memorials and cemeteries of Europe as illustrated by his personal photographs.

PHS of NL formed March 2016

Toronto. PHSC member Edith Cuerrier recently announced that she has formed the Photographic Historical Society of Newfoundland and Labrador. The first meeting of this organization was held in Ms Cuerrier’s home at Paradise NL.

PHSCNL was formed to serve like-minded folks interested in photographic history. We first saw her work back in December 2011 when a summary of her thesis, “George Eastman in Newfoundland and Labrador“, was published in issue 37-3 of Photographic Canadiana.

Stan Douglas Hasselblad Winner 2016

Hasselblad-Award-Winner-Stan-Douglas-Michigan-Theatre-smToronto. Congratulations to Artist Stan Douglas of Vancouver, winner of the prestigious Hasselblad Foundation award in 2016.

My thanks to PHSC Journal editor Bob Lansdale for bringing this story to my attention. I chose Douglas’s1999 Michigan Theatre photograph (click icon at left) to illustrate this post.

The following excerpt is from his biography:
“Stan Douglas was born in 1960 in Vancouver, where he currently lives and works. He attended the Emily Carr College of Art + Design from 1979 to 1982. From 1982 to 1983, he made installations with projected slides, which he presented in movie theatres. In 1989 his first series of short works for television, the twelve Television Spots (1988), were broadcast in Saskatoon and Ottawa amid regular programming, as if they were commercials.
