150 Years of Documentary Photography – Vincenzo Pietropaolo

We have two speakers for March.

Dale Barnes will speak on his work at the CBC during the 1950s and 60s. He will talk specifically about the many celebrities he photographed from the mid 1950s to mid 60s such as the famous folk singer Bob Dylan.

Vincenzo Pietropaolo will be our second speaker for the evening.  Vince is both an adept photographer and a book author. He has spoken to the PHSC a number of times, most recently at our June 2017 celebration of Canada’s 150th year anniversary.

Dale Barnes
“Dale was born in Barnes, Surrey, England.   In 1955, he completed his studies at LSE University  and his photographic apprenticeship under Tomas Day at Brunel Studios.

“The following year, Dale immigrated to Toronto Canada to join CBC Television where he served as its Still Photographer for a decade. In 1966, he was promoted to Producer/ Director and was sent to India with a crew to film a documentary on Doctor Robert McClure. it was the first colour broadcast in North America and led to his transfer to Montreal to head up CBC’s colour broadcasts of Expo 67 and our Centennial celebrations.

“He resigned from CBC in 1976 to join ABC TV (at the time he was the Senior Executive Producer for sports, variety and feature programming in Montreal). Dale also worked as Senior Producer for MTV and was the first person contracted by TSN when they received their broadcast license (he was the producer/host commentator for soccer and international sports). Dale left TSN upon being appointed Commissioner of soccer for Canada, a position he held for five years.

“He produced, directed and wrote four musical Dinner Theatre productions and many independent television productions. Dale retired in 2005 and lives at the Performing Arts Lodge in downtown Toronto with Joyce, his wife of 47 years.

Vincenzo Pietropaolo.
From his website we learn that, “Vincenzo Pietropaolo is a documentary photographer based in Toronto, where he immigrated as a child with his family. Self taught, he became active in photography in 1970, documenting the people of his newly adopted city.

“He attended York University and University of Toronto before he interrupted his studies to pursue a career in city planning. After a distinguished career of 15 years as a town planner with the City of Toronto, in 1991 he returned to his earlier love and passion – social documentary photography. He eventually resumed his formal studies as an adult, and obtained a Master of Fine Arts degree from Ryerson University.

“He has since worked as a full time independent photographer, with specialties in photojournalism, documentary photo essays, architectural photography (large format), corporate portraits, annual reports, and landscape photography.”
