John Denison is a graduate in Fine Arts from York University in Toronto. He established THE BOSTON MILLS PRESS to produce fine quality books on local history and early technology. I have purchased a number of his publications over the past years and each and every one has been a delight. John has published a number of titles about Muskoka and its world famous wooden power boats of the 20s and 30s as well as many titles of interest to railroad buffs.
The November talk featured the images and information John tracked down on Frank Micklethwaite. Micklethwaite captured the feeling and holiday spirit of an area which became a favoured vacation destination for well-to-do North Americans in an era when travel by train and steamer was the route to a summer holiday at a board and breakfast, hotel or one's own estate.
Micklethwaite, is well known to many members of the PHSC. Harold Mcnutt some years ago met with Mickethwaite's family and acquired many of his old wood and brass cameras. These wonderful tools of a by-gone era now belong to another member. The city of Toronto mounted a display of Micklethwaite's images at the Market Gallery in recent years.
I chose to use the dust cover images from two recent Boston Mills Press books on Muskoka as an icon for November's talk. They are oversize books of about 190 - 200 pages of photographic images and narrative which captures the beauty of Muskoka. If you would like a copy contact your bookseller and ask for:
