Fascinating images of the city’s people and places from the mid 19th century into the early 20th century are revealed in this newly released book. Over 60 professional photographers are described from the first itinerant daguerreotypists to well known resident photographers such as James Powell, Henry Henderson, and Sheldon & Davis.
Daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, calotypes, tintypes, cartes de visite, cabinet cards, and paper prints are illustrated, along with technical drawings.
The first edition of this book won a prize in 1980 from the National Film Board of Canada. This edition, enlarged and revised, has been awarded a prize from the Photographic Historical Society of Canada.
"filled with the kind of information historians lust after" -- Hastings County Historical Society
"the book’s plates vividly illustrate the faces and places of Kingston’s past, with images ranging from the familiar to the eerie to the rare" -- Kingston This Weekend
